Terms of use

The straightforward ground rules for using Jersey Barter.

Last updated 13 October 2026

1. About Jersey Barter

Jersey Barter is a local marketplace where adults with a genuine Jersey connection can exchange goods, time, services and skills without requiring a cash price. The service is operated in Jersey by Jersey Barter. You can use the help and contact form or email hello@barter.je.

The core marketplace is free to use. Plus is an optional set of future extras; it is not currently available for purchase and Jersey Barter does not currently take payments.

2. Who can use it

You must be at least 18, have a genuine Jersey connection, and be able to complete exchanges on the island. This is based on your self-confirmation; Jersey Barter does not currently verify identity, age, qualifications or residency.

Jersey Barter is currently for private individuals making occasional personal exchanges. Do not use it to advertise or transact as a business, professional trader or commercial seller. Keep your account secure and use it only for yourself. We may pause access where safety, fraud, misuse or a breach of these terms is suspected.

3. Your listings and offers

Only post something you own or are genuinely able and permitted to provide. Descriptions, photographs, availability and claims about condition or qualifications must be accurate. Do not post personal addresses, bank details, passwords or verification codes.

A proposal is not agreed until the listing owner accepts it. Members remain responsible for deciding whether an exchange is suitable, agreeing its scope, checking goods, completing it safely, and dealing with any tax or other obligations that apply to them. Jersey Barter is not a party to the exchange and does not guarantee a member, item, skill, outcome or value.

4. Prohibited exchanges

Do not offer anything illegal, unsafe, stolen, counterfeit, recalled or regulated in a way that makes a peer-to-peer exchange inappropriate. This includes weapons, drugs and prescription medicines, alcohol, tobacco or vapes, sexual services, money, crypto, gift cards, financial services, animals offered as goods, and requests for bank-account access or identity documents.

Dangerous goods rules can apply even when an item is given away. Private sellers should own the item and describe it accurately. Anyone acting as a trader has additional legal duties.

5. Safety and behaviour

Follow the Community Rules and Safety Guide. Be respectful, do not harass or pressure anyone, and report suspicious behaviour. For urgent danger, contact the emergency services rather than relying on a platform report.

6. Moderation and availability

We may hide listings, close exchanges, restrict accounts or preserve limited records where reasonably needed for safety, support, legal obligations or dispute handling. Reports are reviewed manually and we cannot promise continuous monitoring or an immediate response.

The service may change, be interrupted or become unavailable. To the extent permitted by Jersey law, we are not responsible for indirect losses or for loss arising from an exchange between members. Nothing here removes rights or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

7. Changes

We may update these terms as the service develops. If a material change requires a new agreement, members will be asked to accept it before posting or proposing another swap.
