Who is responsible

Jersey Barter is the controller responsible for personal information used by Jersey Barter. Use the contact form or email hello@barter.je for access, correction, deletion, objection or other privacy requests. We will verify a request before disclosing account information.

Information we use

  • Your Jersey Barter account identifier, display name and email address verified with a one-time sign-in code.
  • Your self-confirmed parish, age eligibility, Jersey connection and agreement version.
  • Listings, photographs, saves, proposals, private swap messages and status history.
  • Reports, support requests, moderation decisions, rate-limit records and security events.
  • Basic technical request and email-delivery data processed by our service providers.

Uploaded JPEG, PNG and WebP files are processed to remove common embedded metadata, including typical location metadata, before storage. Do not rely on this as a substitute for checking what is visible in the photograph.

How it is used

We use this information to provide the marketplace and private swap rooms, prevent abuse, respond to support and safety concerns, protect the service, understand how it is used, and meet legal obligations. The main grounds are providing the service you request, our legitimate interests in operating a safe local marketplace, consent where specifically requested, and legal obligations where applicable.

What other people can see

Active listings are public and may be found through search engines or shared outside Jersey Barter. They show your public display name, parish, listing details and photograph. Exact addresses and email addresses are not shown. A copied link or screenshot may remain available after a listing changes or is removed. An accepted proposal creates a private page for the two members, containing the agreed listing, offer and messages.

Service providers and transfers

Cloudflare hosts the application, database and uploaded files and provides automated abuse protection. MailerSend delivers one-time account codes and essential proposal and private-message notifications, and therefore processes the destination email address and necessary delivery information. These providers operate under their own infrastructure and terms and may process information outside Jersey; where required, appropriate safeguards should apply.

Retention

We keep information only for as long as it is reasonably needed to provide the service, protect members, handle support or disputes, and meet legal obligations. Removed listings and photos are disconnected from public and member access immediately. If permanent file deletion fails, it enters a private admin retry queue until storage cleanup succeeds. Limited text, proposal, report, moderation and security records may be retained where needed for safety, support, dispute handling and legal requirements. Private swap messages remain visible to participants after completion or cancellation. You may ask us to review or delete information using the contact form.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you may ask for access, correction, deletion, restriction, portability or objection, and may withdraw consent where consent is used. You can also complain to the Jersey Office of the Information Commissioner.

Cookies and local storage

Jersey Barter uses an essential, secure session cookie to keep members signed in. Only a random session token is placed in the cookie; the corresponding account session is stored in the database and can be revoked when you sign out. Jersey Barter does not use advertising cookies. Any future analytics or payment tools will require this notice to be updated first.
