Swap safely

A practical guide for exchanging goods, time and skills with someone new.

Before accepting

  • Read the description closely and ask about faults, materials, size, timing and what is included.
  • For a service, agree the task, duration, boundaries and expected result in writing.
  • Check qualifications, insurance or permissions yourself where the task requires them.
  • Be cautious if someone creates urgency, changes the deal or asks to leave the platform immediately.

Plan a safe handover

  • For a first exchange, meet in a busy public place during daylight where practical.
  • Tell someone where you are going and arrange your own transport.
  • Do not publish or send a home address until it is genuinely necessary and you feel comfortable.
  • Inspect an item and test it safely before handing yours over.

Never send money or secrets

Jersey Barter exchanges should not require advance payment. Never send bank details, crypto, gift-card codes, passwords, one-time codes, identity documents or remote access to a device. A request for these is a strong warning sign.

Services in homes

Start with a clear conversation about who will attend, access, tools, materials, pets and safeguarding needs. For electrical, gas, building, care or other regulated work, check that the person is legally permitted, qualified and insured for the task.

If something feels wrong

Stop the exchange, leave the situation and preserve relevant messages. Use the report control or contact the Jersey Barter team. For an emergency or immediate danger, call 999. For non-emergency police help in Jersey, call 01534 612612.
